Well, it’s September. How are you doing on those New Year’s goals?
How many have you met? How many have you set? Have you set any? I know it seems like every year we start out with the greatest intentions, but somehow something (read “everything”) comes up and we just don’t get there do we?
It is NOT too late. It’s only September, we have 3 whole months yet. So what realistic goals can we set and meet before we have to think about next year’s goals. I know that right about now some of you are wandering over to the couch now thinking that this year’s goals will work very well as next year’s goals. Procrastinators! “Procrastination today insures a busier tomorrow”. Just think, though, four whole months remain in this year. What could I achieve, in my relationships, in my career, in my self-care, how about my finances? These four areas can be improved with a little effort. You could do one a month, hmmmmm.
Be realistic! You may even start out with a small, easy to make goal in each area. Then as the achievement becomes a repeatable pattern it will become easier to “raise the bar” for greater results. We call it the Pyramid Method. The first level is the largest, it has the biggest footprint. The next level is slightly smaller so it takes less effort to build, and the next is even smaller. Get the picture? You reach greater heights with less effort until it seems effortless to you. This is a pattern of behavior that can, and will, work for you.
Be specific! Assign a specific time and date to your goal. Spell it out so that someone could call you on that date and time to check on how you did.
Pick an accountability partner to help hold you to your goal. Choose someone who you trust to act in your best interests. One who will encourage you, but not enable you.
Remember to reward yourself along the way. The new wardrobe should not be the only reward for the weight reduction goal you set. Our mind needs encouragement and rewards along the way, so look to do something nice for you every two to three weeks. A facial, new nails, that new tool you have been looking at, anything that would make you feel good about your progress along the way will help keep you on target to the goal. Remember, it is a reward, so make it something outside the normal things you do, or buy anyway.
Write your goals down. A twenty year study of Ivy League College graduates showed that those who wrote out their goals, only 3%, had achieved not only their goals, but as much as the 97% who did not write out their goals, combined. What about the 97% of graduates who did not write out their goals? They achieved only as much as the average business person.
So, what would happen to your life if, POOF, a miracle happened and all your goals were met? All of a sudden you have that “love of your life” in your life. You are working in your dream job. Your hobbies are satisfying. Money is no longer a concern; you have all that you need. Think about it; are any of these goals your goals? Are all of these goals your goals? Would you like them to be? Start small and build a Pyramid, and look, just around the corner, a whole new set of goals to grow to.
