Want Better Business Answers?

Imagine this…

You enter an elevator, not paying much attention to the person already on board. You push the button for your floor and as you step back you notice them…it’s your favorite author.

You gush some sort of silly sounding, “I love your work, I’ve always wanted to write my own book” and blush. It is at this point that10question1 your all-time favorite agent of change turns to you and says, “I can give you one piece of advice on becoming a bestselling author. What do you want to know?”

You are caught completely off guard. Your brain goes blank; your mouth goes dry as you just stand there staring dumbfounded at them. They smile and say, “OK, well keep at it” and they exit the elevator.

The doors close and you come back to life. “I blew it, how could I completely muck up this once in a lifetime opportunity” are the thoughts pounding in your head. Why did this opportunity slip through your fingers unrealized? Because you were not prepared. And it happens more often than you realize.

I was a break out session speaker recently for International Women’s Day here in St. Louis. My topic was women growing their business. Before the presentation started, I talked to a dozen or so women in the crowd, asking each of them the same questions: Why are you here, what do you need to know in order to grow/make money in your business, how can these speakers assist you? And the answers I received back were all the same genre: I don’t know…I’m just here to “soak” things up…I was just curious.

There is a mindset shift I teach all of my coaching clients: if you want better answers from life, you need to ask better questions.  All of these attendees were experiencing some sort of difficulty in their business.  How do I know that?  It’s life! The corporate woman could be having a challenge with an employee, the entrepreneur wondering when to hire a team member, both of them wanting to know how to make business and family time work together.  Just like our elevator example though, they stood there unsure of what to ask when offered the chance to improve the quality of their life. Let’s make sure life does not catch you by surprise with these 3 items:

1. The Question.

You have 5 areas of your life where you spend the most mental time: finances, health, relationships, career, potential (this last area covers hobbies, places you want to go, things you want to do such as write a book).

Now think about someone you admire in each of these areas; it could be a celebrity or maybe the local standout that you respect.  If you could ask them 1 question about their success, the same accomplishment that seems to elude you, what would that question be?  Keep that tucked away in your mind, at the ready.  Anytime you come across someone who is similar to the Success Star you admire, you have your life enhancing question(s) ready.

2. The Presentation.

When you are offered a question/answer time at an event, there is a way to present your question and yourself for maximum impact.  If no microphones are available, you want to stand a bit sideways where you are facing the speaker(s) as well as the audience.  Introduce yourself as well as your tagline before you ask your question.  An example would be: “I’m Dawn Ferguson, Business Coach and Hypnotist.  I work with women entrepreneurs to stop their bad habits and bad beliefs of undercharging and over-deliverying so they can step into their 6-figure and beyond business. My question is __________.”

3. The Follow-up.

Be prepared to follow up with the speaker(s) who answered your question.  A hand written thank sent by snail mail will place you above everyone else they met that day.  In your note include an abbreviated form of your question to spark their memory of you.  If it was someone from out of town, offer to be of any assistance they might need, the next time they visit.  Also remember to include your business card.  And be sincere.

It comes down to this; if you want to build your business faster, easier, better, quicker, then you need to be prepared to ask the needed questions of the mentors, teachers and coaches who have gone before you and have achieved what you desire.  Or you can just show up and absorb what the world gives you.  Magnificence or mediocrity, the choice is yours.

Failure is the Price You Pay for Success

Failure is the price you pay for success

These were the words of wisdom that Drew relayed to me.  Yes, deep thoughts straight from the fortune cookie he held in his hand.

I have an area of my life that I repeatedly fail at. So, I decided to view those failures as seen through the advice in the fortune cookie.

1. Price

Failure is the price I’m paying.  But is the price to high?  Here in the last few months I’ve tried many things to increase my business of helping others. Most of them didn’t work. What was the price I’ve paid?

I’ve held “free” presentations. Some did not bring me any additional business, but I was able to help someone who didn’t have the funds to see me privately.  I’ve gone to networking meetings letting others know my business exists.  Some did not result in any business but I’ve met others I normally would not have known.  I’ve written extra, read extra, done extra but I haven’t always experienced extra results.

The price is not too high, though.  I’ve become better at what I do; I have increased my knowledge and experience by all this. In all, I’ve become a better me. This in contrast to a few years back where I was in a relationship where the price was too high.  I sacrificed my self-worth, self-esteem and self-image, hoping for better results between me and the person I was with.  Reminds me of the definition of insanity; continuing to do what you’ve always done while expecting different results.

2. Whom am I paying this price to?

I’m doing many new things right now to help my business grow.  Some are working, most are not.  Whatever I’m doing though, benefits me.  I’m the one that is paying the tuition and I’m the one receiving it.  With every failure and success I’m learning something new about me.

There have been times in my life though, where the tuition was paid to someone else. I was trying to change me to fit their idea of what I should be. These situations never worked out because I wasn’t the benefactor, they were. If I’m going to live the life of my dreams, it’s going to be my dream and not someone else’s.

3. What is the success that I’m striving for, the achievement I desire that I‘m willing to experience failure for?

When Drew and I work with clients we ask them how their life will be different, now that they’ve achieved their success. Many times they don’t know! If you don’t know what you’re aiming for, how will you know when you hit it?

I know exactly what I want and when. In fact, I recently missed the deadline for one of my goals. Now what to do…admit that it didn’t work, that what I tried failed.  What to do next?  I could get rid of the goal all together and give up. Instead I’m reviewing what I’ve learned that works, what doesn’t and moving on. My goal has not changed, just the date for acquiring it.

Are You Overwhelming Your Potential Clients?

I walked out of the spa therapy room infused with a profound sense of well-being… Just to have it shattered by my attendant shoving a dozen little sample packet into my hands and beginning product pitches on items I didn’t care about, didn’t want and wasn’t going to buy. Are you doing the same with your clients?

A few weeks ago my youngest son gave me a specialty spa facial as a birthday gift. Since it was my 50th birthday, I was excited to slough off the old and begin a new chapter of my life with a new skin care regime. This is exactly what I told my facial specialist, that I needed a new routine to match how my skin had changed. BUT I told her that I keep things as simple as possible which meant I only wanted a cleanser and possibly moisturizer. Did she listen, no.

Instead she tried to sell me every single product she used on my face. In doing so, she completely overwhelmed me. And when any of us become overwhelmed, we shut down. This results in NO SALE. Are you missing the clues that your potential clients are giving you that points to a sale? Are you giving so many options that you are overwhelming your clients, and they’re shutting down? What can you do so you meet your clients buying criteria as well as make a sale?

Here are three simple steps for Sales Success:

1. The mind ALWAYS takes the path of least resistance. Find out if your potential clients are using a service and/or a product similar to yours. If they are, find one or two areas where they can begin to use you in place of their old, outdated habit. If they are not currently using something like you, then give them one simple step that they can take to begin with you. If my facial specialist would have listened to my verbal cues, she would have discovered I needed cleanser and moisturizer and would have made that sale.

2. The trigger, the routine, the end result. Neuroscience tells us that these are the three components that make up habits. The trigger is something in the environment that sets off the habit, the routine is the habit itself, and the end result is what we hope to get from the habit. For example, smokers expect their cigarettes to bring them the end results of stress relief or giving them permission to take a moment for them. Emotional overeaters can expect food to bring them the results of comfort, or reward.

Find out the end results your potential clients are searching for. Then match your product and/or service to those end results. Instead, too many salespeople tried to sell the process which is what my facial specialist focused on, what products I should be using in what order. I wasn’t in the market to buy products; I was looking to invest in beautiful skin. Your clients are not wanting to buy a process, they are ready to invest in specific, tangible end results.

3. Only the routine/habit can be modified. In step number two I talked about the three pieces of a habit: the trigger, the routine, the end result. Science tells us that the trigger and end result will always be present. The only thing that can be modified is the routine/habit that connects the two. This is where you want to insert your product/service, during the routine. But first you need to discover what triggers your clients into their old habit/routine. Is it a person, a place, the time of day?

Simply point out to your potential clients that every time they experience this trigger, they are going to run their old routine and get the same old end results. Then you can share how they can keep those old triggers but now they can easily insert your product/service for the enhanced quality of life end results they desire. It would have been so easy for me to use a different cleanser and moisturizer than what I was currently using. But the facial specialist lost me as soon as she started adding on products I wasn’t ready to incorporate.

Overwhelm your clients and not only do you lose the sale right then, you lose the future ability to present to them again. Keep it simple by offering just one or two easy steps that they can take with you. Steps that will fit in to the routines they already have in place AND will bring them the results they’ve been wanting but missing.

It’s Not Too Late for the New Year’s Goals

Well, it’s September.  How are you doing on those New Year’s goals?

How many have you met?  How many have you set?  Have you set any?  I know it seems like every year we start out with the greatest intentions, but somehow something (read “everything”) comes up and we just don’t get there do we?

It is NOT too late.  It’s only September, we have 3 whole months yet.  So what realistic goals can we set and meet before we have to think about next year’s goals.  I know that right about now some of you are wandering over to the couch now thinking that this year’s goals will work very well as next year’s goals.  Procrastinators!  “Procrastination today insures a busier tomorrow”.  Just think, though, four whole months remain in this year.  What could I achieve, in my relationships, in my career, in my self-care, how about my finances?  These four areas can be improved with a little effort.  You could do one a month, hmmmmm.

Be realistic!  You may even start out with a small, easy to make goal in each area.  Then as the achievement becomes a repeatable pattern it will become easier to “raise the bar” for greater results.  We call it the Pyramid Method.  The first level is the largest, it has the biggest footprint.  The next level is slightly smaller so it takes less effort to build, and the next is even smaller.  Get the picture?  You reach greater heights with less effort until it seems effortless to you.  This is a pattern of behavior that can, and will, work for you.

Be specific!  Assign a specific time and date to your goal.  Spell it out so that someone could call you on that date and time to check on how you did.

Pick an accountability partner to help hold you to your goal.  Choose someone who you trust to act in your best interests.  One who will encourage you, but not enable you.

Remember to reward yourself along the way.  The new wardrobe should not be the only reward for the weight reduction goal you set.  Our mind needs encouragement and rewards along the way, so look to do something nice for you every two to three weeks.  A facial, new nails, that new tool you have been looking at, anything that would make you feel good about your progress along the way will help keep you on target to the goal.  Remember, it is a reward, so make it something outside the normal things you do, or buy anyway.

Write your goals down.  A twenty year study of Ivy League College graduates showed that those who wrote out their goals, only 3%, had achieved not only their goals, but as much as the 97% who did not write out their goals, combined.  What about the 97% of graduates who did not write out their goals?  They achieved only as much as the average business person.

So, what would happen to your life if, POOF, a miracle happened and all your goals were met?  All of a sudden you have that “love of your life” in your life.  You are working in your dream job.  Your hobbies are satisfying.  Money is no longer a concern; you have all that you need.  Think about it; are any of these goals your goals?  Are all of these goals your goals?  Would you like them to be?  Start small and build a Pyramid, and look, just around the corner, a whole new set of goals to grow to.
